The Effects of Natural Hazards (Tsunami Disaster): Migration and Dynamics of Development in Medan City

Abstract
The city of Medan is one of the biggest cities, which the tsunami disaster has destroyed in the affected region (Nangroe Aceh Darussalam and Nias). Medan is the area (city) that receives a lot of effects from natural hazards. A long time before the tsunami disaster happened in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam and Nias, Medan city had become the goal of migration from the second area, and had given the color of development to Medan city. Instability of Nangroe Aceh Darussalam is caused by internal conflict, which has induced some of Nangroe Aceh Darussalam people move to Medan, and people from Nias move to Medan. Another driving force for migration is the hope for a better economic life.

The Tsunami disaster destroyed the second area and had some effects on Medan city in different sectors, like demographics, economics and the settlements. In the demographic sector, for example, an increase in migration happened. In the economic sector, economic activities have become more dynamic, because some immigrants need goods and services or goods and services are sent to the disaster area from Medan. Medan city has become a transit city for visitors to see Nangroe Aceh Darussalam and Nias. In the settlement sector, the area of refugee shelters in peri urban areas is growing. The people who are safe from disaster and have enough money will be looking for new alternative settlements in Medan. Some of the effects have made the development of Medan city more dynamic.
