Disasters Are Not Natural - Art Exhibition
United Nations Headquarters
About
The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is presenting an exhibition of contemporary artworks and socially engaged art projects from around the world to highlight challenges and solutions related to disaster risk reduction (DRR).
Organised as part of the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, and the midpoint in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the purpose of the exhibition is to invite visitors to think about the individual and collective actions we need to take to get back on track. How can we ensure a world where disaster risks no longer threaten the well-being of people and the future of the planet?
The exhibition is split into three parts.
Disaster Impacts reflects on how disasters are coming faster, lasting longer and hitting harder with the brutally unequal impacts. Featured artists: Lars Jan, Chris Wainwright, Sidney Regis, Din Muhammad Shibly, Veejay Villafranca.
Understanding and Reducing Risk reminds that there is no such thing as a natural disaster. There are hazards such as earthquakes, floods, droughts, and cyclones, and some cannot be prevented. But we can curb their destructive power—in other words, stop them from turning into major disasters—through reducing people’s exposure and vulnerability to harm. Featured artists: Søren Dahlgaard, Eve Mosher, Common Room - Arum Dayu and Yoyo Yogasmana.
New Imaginings invites to imagine a world without disasters. Featured artists: Firoz Mahmud, Maria Lucia Cruz Correia, Mary Mattingly.
