Tackling infrastructure resilience in Madagascar
ANTANANARIVO, MADAGASCAR - On 26 March 2024, the Cellule de Prévention et d'Appui à la Gestion des Urgences (CPGU) officially launched the "Enhancing Infrastructure Resilience through Strengthened Governance in Madagascar" project in collaboration with CDRI and UNDRR.
With a unified goal of improving infrastructure resilience in Madagascar, the meeting brought together government officials responsible for infrastructure development but also representatives from the private sector, the country's main economic sectors, development partners, and institutions working towards building resilient infrastructure in the country.
In his welcome speech, Mr Elisaha RAKOTOSEHENO, Director of Resilience Promotion representing the CPGU's Acting Executive Secretary, emphasized the "critical role of infrastructure in stimulating economic growth and improving social conditions for the population of Madagascar". He highlighted the strategic importance of strengthening infrastructure resilience to climate change, given its impact on both populations and infrastructure vulnerabilities.
The "Enhancing Infrastructure Resilience through Strengthened Governance in Madagascar" project signifies a new collaboration between the Malagasy government and international partners aiming to strengthen the resilience of the country's infrastructure. Preliminary results of institutional mapping and national coordination mechanisms regarding Disaster Risk Reduction in Madagascar were presented followed by engaging discussions.
As a pivotal step towards successful implementation, the establishment of a Technical Working Group (TWG) was introduced. The TWG will play a vital role in validating various outputs from the project implementation, including stress test analysis and assessing policy alignment with the Principles for Resilient Infrastructure.
The kick-off meeting marks a significant milestone in efforts to enhance infrastructure resilience in Madagascar. Moving forward, the project aims to build on this momentum to create a more resilient future for the country.
